Prison Reforms together with release of Prisoners languished in untrials on card

Law ministry, Veerappa Moily, has planned to set a deadline of 6 months to release all the under trial prisoners from the jails. All those who have been languishing in jains for petty offences
or those who have already under gone maximum or major portion of punishment without conviction by July 31st would be released. He has chalked out a plan, under which the country has been divided in zones and there are many other measures for faster closure of the cases.

In an another step the Union Ministry is planning to set up prisons, to be called as “correctional
homes” from policy implementation, outside the city area. They would build the correctional homes
with changed and good interiors.  It cell would be made better with Hi-tech facilities for security
and communication.

Our View: On release of under trial cases, the government is doing good to do this once but with
time you the number of pending cases would rise again. We would like measures that helps in avoiding the situation at the first place.

These are very positive moves by the centre to bring in reforms for the prisons. This would go a
long way in helping society to correct those victims. Though the steps are based on a report of the
Justice Anand Narain Mulla Committee on jail reforms (1980-83) which have not been implemented yet
but nevertheless it better to be late then never. Just one thing that comes to every reader’s mind that the land deal should be transparent and be made public. From now on we would need similar changes and reforms but not so late as the case is for these set of reforms.
