Maoists Attack Bihar: 16 killed including 5 children

16 people, including 11 men and  5 children have been killed by Maoist leader in Amosi Bharen Diara village of Bihar. Dispute over 30 bighas of land is said to be the reason behind the attacks. The attack was carried out with an intention of grabbing the land. This is the first case during the NDA regime led by CM Nitish Kumar.

PM earlier this month had agreed that the government had not yet achieved much success in containing the left extremism. Note that last year alone there were a 1,591 incidents of Maoist violence resulting in 721 killings; this year until August there had been 1,405 incidents, resulting in 580 deaths spread over 11 states as told by the home minister P. Chidambaram. Thus it still remains a great internal security threat to our country.

Our View: Governments might be taking steps to address the problem but the maoists continue to haunt the nation. The alarming thing being that many sections including youth and intelligentsia are joining the movements. The problem has to be checked and contained; devised strategies have to look into many aspects like security management, economic stability and source of funds (to the movement).

Thousands feared dead in Sumatra Indonesia Earthquake

Indonesia: A series of earthquakes have kept Indonesian cities, in west Sumatra, including the capital Padang distressed. The first one measuring 7.6 in magnitude (Richter Scale) had struck on Wednesday following which there were dozens of quakes a major one measuring 6.8. The amount of destruction have been huge; houses and building have collapsed and there are power and phone outages. The toll, which is already above 400, could rise to above 1000 as the scale and spread is bigger than previously felt earthquakes. There is high possibility of consequent volcanic eruptions as there are 3 major active volcanoes in the region, earlier intense earthquakes have had similar consequences. The government operations are running in full swing; there was a greater preparedness in the region as these quakes are a common phenomenon.

Our View: The death toll could be lower than what was experienced in 2006 ‘Yogyakarta earthquake’ thought this time the earthquake was more intense and wide spread. The death toll could rise further if the volcanic activity increases and the people are not rescued in time from both quake and volcanic eruptions.

Lupin buys US rights to Antara from Oscient Pharma

Indian pharmaceutical company Lupin Limited has paid USD 38.61 mn (EUR 26.5 mn) to acquire the US rights for the cardiovascular product Antara (Fenofibrate Capsules 43 mg and 130 mg) from Oscient Pharmaceuticals (OTC: OSCIQ), under the procedures of the US Bankruptcy Court. Antara had net sales of USD70m for 2008.

Our view: Antara is a product in growth mode (its sales increased 20% annually) also has market share of 4.5%. If Lupin has a planned for a way to make the product available in other countries also, then its a good deal.

Real Estate Prices on Rise – Right Time for Investment?

With economy showing positive signs of recovery, real estate buyers and sellers are seeing some activity again. The prices have already gone up by some 5-15% as compared to the prices in January. With festive season ahead (usually is sees 30-40% of the yearly sales) an investment in real estate could be a less riskier and profitable investment. But a hike in demand could see a downward trend if the Realtors decide to increase the prices artificially, leading to again unsold projects for the Realtors.

As per Cushman & Wakefield, the estimated demand it over 7.5 million units (across all sections and categories), out of which 4.5 million units are from Metros only. So if you want to invest in real estate for long term or for making your portfolio complete you have a good option to invest now. But maintain enough liquidity to hold the property till you get the right prices. In such a case, more liquid options could be making an investment in ‘REITs (Real Estate Investment Trusts), options, property oriented mutual funds, and other mortgage backed securities’.

Our View: See if you can find other avenues of investment to get handsome short term gains before making an investment in Real Estate for long term. Real Estate prices are often hiked by some players. So analyze if you are buying a property that has good growth potential.  From a long term (5 year+) perspective, today’s real estate prices are attractive in many cases, almost every real estate, especially – residential and land – will see good appreciation from current levels.
