Centrally funded technical institutions (or the CFTIs) are currently short of more than 3000 faculty members, which is about 1/3rd their total strength. CFTIs include the IITs, IIMs, IISc Bangalore, ISM Dhanbad, NITs a total of 9 such institutions. The reason being cited is their inability to pay the qualified candidates, salaries at par with the market.
Our View: Along with better pay packages, the research facility and the ways of converting their projects into self sustaining projects/ventures and provision for other alternate source of income would also make to take up career as faculty in CFTIs. Large companies like GE and Reliance Industries often offer very good R&D facilities and pay to the same profile of people who could make good IIT faculty. We have to see how US universities have managed to hold to key faculty. Its with a combinations of top pay and cutting edge industry projects that allow faculty to feel professionally satisfied. It will take us sometime to reach there.
