Mumbai: Graduate by degree and many of them with some additional professional qualification have applied for the post of Licensed porter in Central Railways. Many are okay applying for it because they feel that no job is bad. They are not doing anything illelegal and are happy about it. Another aspect is that they will have trouble passing the physical tests as it makes them do things which are tough physically.
Our View: One of the hidden reasons for doing this is that once hired they can look up to the job of gangman in railways. This scheme was introduced by Lalu Prasad Yadav in his tenure. So in a way they are applying to get into a gangman job that is secure being a central railway job. Also very clearly government and central jobs, in many of the cases is viewed as a relaxed job with very less responsibility and job pressure. They even get paid and promoted for not performing well. Indian youths getting attracted towards these jobs, is a bad indicator for our economy. But it also points to another issue, that we are not able to provide people with equally challenging and good paying job that brings out the best in an individual. It is because of lack of job opportunities and lack of people with the skills required by the industry.
